How the stub-up formula works

A bender doesn't bend at a sharp corner; the conduit curves around the bender shoe. The deduct (also called take-up) makes up for that curve. Subtract it from the stub height and put your mark there.

Common hand bender deducts are 5″ for 1/2″ EMT, 6″ for 3/4″ EMT, 8″ for 1″ EMT and 11″ for 1 1/4″ EMT. Benders vary, so use the deduct stamped on yours if it's different.

If the stub is shorter than the deduct, it can't be bent with that bender. Bend a longer stub and cut it down.
